I didn’t plan to change jobs over the summer, but circumstances rather forced the situation upon me! My manager got in touch very early in his day at the end of June to tell me that my position was being eliminated at VMware by Broadcom. After the initial shock wore off I realised that the timing was actually quite good for me as I had planned on taking a few weeks off anyway. Life had one more surprise for me on my last day though.
Having told my network that I was coming on to the market, I had already received a few leads along with a number of other personal messages. However, nothing that I would call “concrete”. Until, that is, I had a message from my good friend Mark Brookfield. It pretty much read: “Get me your CV today!!!”.
I hadn’t properly updated my CV for some time at that point (nearly 9 years in VMware) and had already resolved to do it after my vacation. So it was a bit of a mad scramble to get it done and sent over. After a few conversations, some remote interviews, and a face-to-face interview I was offered the role.
Starting in September I am a Principal Engineer working on a Managed Service Provider (MSP) platform for a large UK organisation. My skills and experience with VMware infrastructure and solutions will still be very relevant, but it won’t be all that I’m doing. Kubernetes, CICD, automation, Terraform, configuration management, IaC… the list is quite long, and very exciting!
